Civil War Governor of Arkansas. He served as the eighth Governor of Arkansas from 1864 to 1868. Murphy had been the only member of the Arkansas secession convention to vote against seceding from the Union in 1861. He was elected governor in a special election held after Union troops captured Little Rock in 1863, forcing the state's Confederate government, led by Governor Harris Flanagin, into exile.
