U.S. Senator. Born the son of U.S. Senator Robert F. Stockton, he graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1843, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1846 and practiced law in Princeton, New Jersey. He served as the New Jersey State reporter to the court of chancery, (1852-580 and was the U.S. Minister to Italy, (1858-61). In 1865, he presented credentials as a Democratic Senator-elect to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1866. When the election was in dispute, the Senate declared the seat vacant and he was again elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving (1869-75). After leaving office, he resumed the practice of law and served as Attorney General of New Jersey, (1877-97). In retirement, he still stayed active in politics until his death.
