US Congressman, US Senator. He served in the United States Army as a Private in Company F, Third Ohio Infantry, during the Army operations agianst Pancho Villa on the Mexican border in 1916. During World War I he served as an officer in the United States Army Field Artillery. He was elected to represent Ohio as an At-Large Delegate to the United States House of Representatives, serving first from 1933 to 1937, then from 1941 to 1943, then finally from 1949 to 1951. During World War II he again served in the United States Army, rising to Lieuteant Colonel and seeing combat in Italy and North Africa. In 1959 he was elcted as a Senator from Ohio to the United States Senate, serving from 1959 to 1971.
