U.S. Congressman, U.S. Presidential Cabinet Member. Born the son of U.S. Congressman Samuel Hoar, he graduated from Harvard University in 1835, was admitted to the bar in 1840 and commenced to practice law in Boston, Massachusetts. He served in the Massachusetts State Senate in 1846, a judge of the court of common pleas, (1849-55) and judge of the Massachusetts State Supreme Court, (1859-69). In 1869, President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him the 30th U.S. Attorney General, serving until his resignation due to cabinet reconstruction in 1870. Remaining in politics, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress, serving (1873-1875). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 78. His on was U.S. Congressman Samuel Hoar.
