The year was 1880. Responding to overcrowded conditions at the Kennedy Street Cemetery, Phillip L. Webster purchased land from Messrs.Fisher and Lane to create a serene resting place for persons of all walks of life and faiths -
firemen, soldiers, loggers, laborers, housewives, children, businessmen, oil men - some prominent, and all the backbone of the community.
So began the historic Oak Hill Cemetery.
----------------------------------
Philip Leavitt Webster was the second son of Philip Huntoon Webster and was born August 6, 1830 in Danbury, NH. His father died when he was an infant. In 1837 his mother married Col. L. C. Little, agent for the Boston United States Land Company. After his stepfather died in 1858, Philip worked for the Land Company but eventually became an undertaker and for 25 years, was the leading undertaker and funeral director in Bradford. Later he became involved in real estate. He was at Fortress Monroe during the war and served as military storekeeper there. He owned orange groves in Florida and spent many winters there. He laid out and placed upon the market Oak Hill Cemetery, which he had charge of for many years. On December 17, 1874, he married Ellen (Johnson) Morrison, daughter of Rufus Johnson and the widow of Archie Morrison. She was the mother of Frank Morrison, who Philip adopted and legally changed his name to Webster.
