Charles Edmond Mellette, who went by "Charlie," was born to Margaret Wylie and Arthur Calvin Mellette on 1 March 1869 in Muncie, Indiana, and moved with his family to the Dakota Territory when he was nine years old.

In 1885, he graduated from Bloomington High School, which was a preparatory school for Indiana University. In 1891, Charlie and his brother Wylie were living together in Portland, Oregon, and both worked for the Union Pacific Railway. In 1895, Charlie worked as a clerk of the district court in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

His father died unexpectedly the following year. In 1897, Charlie and a few business associates started the Pittsburg Wholesale Grocery Company in Pittsburg, Kansas. Charlie served in various administrative roles and eventually became president of the company.

He married Mary Moffett Robinson (1872-1968) in Vernon County, Missouri, on 10 December 1902, and they had one daughter: Laura Margaret (b. 1905). In 1918, the family moved to Mary's hometown of Nevada, Missouri, and Charles joined his father-in-law's business, Robinson Hardware.

He died on 11 September 1964 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Independence, Missouri.
