Tennessee Governor, U.S. Senator. Born in Wilson County Tennessee, for many years he was a farmer and he studied law but did not practice. Active in many county farming campaigns, he entered politics and was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives (1837-40). In 1941, he was elected as a Whig and the first native Tennessean, the 10th Tennessee Governor, serving until 1845. During his administration, the permanent capital of Tennessee was fixed at Nashville and institutions were established for the blind and deaf. After leaving office, he was a presidential elector-at-large for Whig candidates Zachary Taylor and Millard Fillmore, which helped a Whig victory in Tennessee in the presidential election of 1848. In 1851, he was elected as a Whig to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1857. After serving in the Senate, he retired to his farm until his death.
