US Senator, US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served the State of Montana in the United States Senate from 1961 until his death. He served the State of Montana’s 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1953 until 1961. His father worked in the banking industry, Lee attended Montana State University briefly prior to transferring to Stanford University. While at Stanford, he participated in football as he studied History and Economics. He later returned to Montana State University where he received his degree in Law. During World War II, Metcalf enlisted with the United States Army and saw action during the Normandy Beach Invasion. Following the war, he remained in Germany and assisted in instituting ordinances for the first free local elections. Following his return home, he served as an associate justice on the Montana Supreme Court from 1946 until 1952. During his tenure in the US Senate, he served on the House Conference Committee and co-chaired the Joint Committee on Congressional Operations until his death. He died suddenly one day prior to his Senate counterpart Hubert H. Humphrey.
