US Congressman, US Senator. Served as a Colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War. Elected as a Delegate from the Dakota Territory to the United States House of Representatives, serving first from 1867 to 1869, then from 1874 to 1875. Elected as a Senator from South Dakota to the United States Senate, serving from 1889 to 1891. Moody County, South Dakota is named in his honor.
