36th Governor of Wisconsin. He served as the Republican governor of the State of Wisconsin from 1965 to 1971. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. Starting his political career, he was a member of the Wisconsin State Senate from 1941 to 1954 before serving as Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin from 1954 to 1958 and from 1960 to 1962. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention from Wisconsin in 1964. After being educated locally, he attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, graduating in 1930, and received a law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School three years later. He was active in sports while in school. He was recognized in the River Falls Wildcat Athletic Hall of Fame with a Distinguished Citizen Award. After leaving the governor's mansion, he became chairman of Heritage Wisconsin Corporation, a Milwaukee bank holding company. In 1994, he was inducted into the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame for his support of the state's wildlife.
