Mississippi Governor. After moving to Mississippi, Pettus entered into a political career. He served as a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives (1846-48) and was a member of the Mississippi State Senate. When Governor Henry S. Foote resigned from office in January 1854, Pettus was senate president and assumed the duties of governor. He held the governorship until John J. McRae was sworn in later that same month. In 1859, he was elected the 33rd Governor of Mississippi and was reelected to a second term in 1861. During his time as Governor, Mississippi seceded from the Union and joined five other states to form the Confederate States of America. After the end his term in 1863, he joined the Confederate Army and served in the Civil War. After the war, he relocated to Arkansas, where he lived until his death at age 53.
