US Congressman. After graduating from the law department of the University of Alabama, he was admitted to the bar and opened a legal firm in Troy, Alabama. During World War I he served as a Private in the aviation section of the United States Army Signal Corps. After the war, he was Pike County's Solicitor. In 1938, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fifth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Lister Hill, was reelected to the Seventy-sixth Congress and to the next twelve succeeding Congresses, and served until 1965. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection resumed the practice of law. He died at age 85 while on a voyage aboard the Queen Elizabeth II.
