US Congressman, US Senator. A blacksmith by trade, during the Revolutionary War he served as a Private and Wagoneer in the Morris County Militia. He later served as a member of the Committee of Observation of Hanover, as Commissioner of Forfeited Estates, and in the Provincial Congress of New Jersey. He was elected to represent New Jersey in the United States House of Representatives, first as an At-Large delegate from 1791 to 1793 and from 1795 to 1797, then from the 2nd Congressional District from 1799 to 1801 (his 1795 election was fascilited by the death of New Jersey Congressman and Declaration of Independence Signer Abraham Clark). In 1805 he was elected as a Democratic Republican Senator from New Jersey to the United States Senate, serving from 1805 to 1809.
