US Senator. He attended Greeneville College for two years, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1841 and commenced to practice law in Greeneville, Tennessee. He was a judge of the First Circuit Court of Tennessee (1854-63), plus engaged in manufacturing. Upon the readmission of the State of Tennessee to representation on July 24, 1866, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1869. Not a candidate for reelection, he engaged in the management of agricultural pursuits until his death at age 73. He also was the son-in-law of President Andrew Johnson.
