US Congressman, US Senator. He graduated from Dartmouth College New Hampshire, in 1819, studied law, admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Danvers, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives in 1825 and a member of the Massachusetts State Senate in 1826. In 1831, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-second and Twenty-third Congresses, serving until 1834, when he resigned. In 1841, he was elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Daniel Webster, serving until 1845. After leaving the Senate, he practiced law and was Attorney General of Massachusetts, in 1853. While on an ocean voyage to Europe, he took ill, was put ashore at Nova Scotia and died at age 59.
