Illinois Governor. Served as a colonel in the United States Army during World War II. Served as Governor of Illinois from 1961 to 1968, and resigned during his second term after receiving an appointment as a federal judge. He served on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, on which his father had also served, from 1968 until his 1974 resignation after being convicted of mail fraud over his being sold racetrack stock far below market value in 1962, in exchange for his awarding favorable racing dates. Sentenced to three years in federal prison, he was paroled after seven months following a lung cancer diagnosis.
