Obituary: Dr. J. Wiley Lucas, 80, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died in a hospital there Monday at 4 p.m. He was a former resident and civil leader at Abingdon. Dr. Lucas was born October 5, 1887, near Chandlerville. He was graduated from the Bath High School, attended Illinois State University at Normal and was graduated in 1914 from McKillip Veterinary College at Chicago. He homesteaded land in South Dakota, taught school in Bath and practiced veterinary medicine for two years in Beardstown before moving to Abingdon in 1916 where he practiced for 32 years. He was Cedar Township supervisor for three terms, a deputy sheriff of Knox County, a constable for four years, Democractic precinct committeeman in Cedar Towship for 20 years and was a member of the Abingdon school board for nine years. He served as postmaster at Abingdon from 1945 to 1953 when he resigned to become poultry inspector for the Department of Agriculture, In 1957 he retired and moved to Florida. On November 20, 1917, he married Matilda Elizabeth Lund in Abingdon. She survives with two sons, Gerald of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Jack of Abingdon; one brother, Scott Lucas of Washington, D.C., and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Abingdon Christian Church, with Rev. John C. Watson and Rev. Donald T. Hogan officiating. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday afternoon and evening at the Newman Funeral Home. Contributions may be made in his memory to the Heart Fund, the family said.
