EUGENE UNDERWOOD, 99, East Church Street, Orlando, a leader of the admiralty bar in New York City for more than 50 years, died Monday, Jan. 1, in Orlando, where he was a resident since his retirement in 1972. He was best known for his trial representation of the Italian Lines in the proceeding that resulted from the 1956 sinking of the Andrea Doria by the Stockholm. His uncle was U.S. Sen. Oscar W. Underwood of Alabama, a leading contender for Democratic nomination for the presidency in 1912 and again in 1924. He was born in Valparaiso, Ind. He was Protestant and a member of Maritime Law Association, American College of Trial Lawyers, India House, Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, Whitehall Club and University Club. Survivors: son, Eugene Jr., New York; stepson, J. Thomas Cardwell, Orlando; stepdaughter, Nancy Cardwell, Arlington, Va. Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home, Orlando.
