Benjamin Davis Moore was born 10 Sep 1810 in Paris, Bourbon Co., KY and died 6 Dec 1846 at the Battle of San Pasqual, near San Diego, CA. He married 8 Jan 1839 Clay Co., MO Martha Moore Hughes born 1818 in NC died 1843 of exposure while on a march from one military post to another. They had two children:
Matthew Joseph Moore born 7 May 1840 Fort Gibson, Indian Territory (Muskogee Co., OK) died 3 March 1918, Santa Barbara Co., CA FAG 80560470 and Mary Ann Moore born 20 July 1842 Fort Scott, Kansas died 21 Aug 1856 Platte Co., MO. FAG 18205536

He is listed on 4 June 1834 at Jefferson Barracks Missouri as First Lieutenant B. D. Moore company G; along with his half-brother Capt. Matthew Duncan, company C. "The first order announcing the appointment in the regiment 5 Mar 1833, Post Commander, Henry Dodge". He participated in at least two excursions to Santa Fe during this time period 1835-1846, helped to build Fort Wayne, and Fort Gibson, and was at Fort Scott when his daughter was born. Most of the time he was stationed at Fort Leavenworth. He participated in the Blackhawk War in 1833 while in the "Mounted Rangers".
"Southern California Quarterly," Vol. VI, by the Historical Society of Southern California, 1903, pp. 10-13; "Sketch of Benjamin Daviess Moore," by his son, M. J. Moore. Los Angeles, CA, (George Rice and Sons), 1904. It says he served on the ship "Erie" in the Mediterranean and other ports.
Susan Shelby Magoffin, "Down the Santa Fe Trail and into Mexico," (University of Nebraska Press), 1926, pp. 63, 67, 112; gives a first hand account of the trip of the Dragoons from Missouri to Santa Fe, under the command of Col. Stephen W. Kearney. It says Moore was appointed as a midshipman on 2 Feb 1829 from Illinois to the U. S. Naval Academy; resigned on 2 Jan 1832, joined the U. S. Army after several cruises to the Mediterranean and other ports; joined as a First Lieutenant on 6 Nov 1832 the "mounted rangers" and transferred to the First Regiment of Dragoons on 19 Sep 1833; promoted to captain on 15 Jun 1837, died 6 Dec 1846 at the Battle of San Pasqual.
National Cemetery Administrations: U. S. Veterans Gravesites, 1775-2006, Provo, UT, buried Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, CA. His brother-in-law Lt. Thomas Clark Hammond also died during the battle and is buried at Fort Rosecrans. See FAG 77283536 for Lt. Hammond, and a description of the battle.
Mrs. W. B. (Julia) Ardery, "The Duncans of Bourbon County, KY" (Lexington, KY: W.S. Welch Publishing), 1943; has information about his parents, his siblings and his death.
His children: Matthew J. Moore and Mary Ann Moore were living in 1850 Platte Co., MO with their grandparents, Matthew and Mary Hughes; Matthew J. Moore was age 10; Mary Ann Moore was age 7. In 1860 Platte Co., MO census M. J. Moore is listed with his grandparents, age 20 born Cherokee Nation, (Oklahoma). See Platte City Cemetery, Platte County, Missouri for his wife and daughter.
