US Senator, US Congressman. He was the legislative father of the Central Arizona Project which brings Colorado River water to Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona and which, in turn, permits the growth of these desert cities. Born in Hayden’s Ferry (now Tempe), Arizona. Graduated from the Normal School of Arizona (now Arizona State University) in 1896; attended Stanford University 1896-1900; engaged with his father in mercantile and flour milling businesses; member, Tempe Town Council 1902-1904; treasurer of Maricopa County 1904-1906; sheriff of Maricopa County 1907-1912. Upon the admission of Arizona as a State in 1912, he was elected as a Democrat to Congress; reelected seven times and then ran for the US Senate in 1926. Elected to the Senate in 1926 and then reelected six times, serving until January 3, 1969. His record for 56 consecutive years of service in Congress, including an unprecedented forty-two in the Senate, was unsurpassed at the time of his retirement; retired and resided in Tempe, Ariz.; died in Mesa, Ariz., January 25, 1972; cremated; ashes interred in family plot at Tempe Butte Cemetery, Tempe, Ariz. His fellow Arizonan, Senator Barry Goldwater said that Carl Hayden did more for Arizona than any other person.
