U.S. Senator. He graduated from Dartmouth College, in 1870, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1871 and commenced to practice law in Lancaster, New Hampshire. He was a Major of the New Hampshire National Guard (1876-79), a member of the New Hampshire State Senate (1883-84) and a delegate to the New Hampshire State constitutional conventions, (1902, 12). In September 1918, he was appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Jacob H. Gallinger, serving until November 5, 1918. Not a candidate for election, he engaged in banking and the railroad business until he retired.
