US Congressman, New Hampshire Governor, US Senator. Elected to represent New Hampshire as At-Large in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1837 to 1841. Also served as a Member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives from 1830 to 1831, and 1835 to 1836, Member of the New Hampshire State Senate from 1832 to 1834, Governor of New Hampshire from 1847 to 1849, United States Senator from New Hampshire from 1853 to 1854, and Delegate to the Democratic National Convention from New Hampshire in 1864.
