US Senator. He graduated from Oberlin Ohio College in 1878, then entered the Western Theological Seminary, Pennslyvainia and graduated in 1882. He was pastor of Congregational churches in Echo and Salt Lake City, Utah, (1882-85) then moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota as pastor and financial secretary of Yankton College. In 1890, he was elected to the South Dakota State Seante and elected as an Independent to the United States Senate in 1891, serving until his death at age 47.
