US Senator. Graduated from Princeton College in 1779, during the height of the Revolutionary War. Engaged in a law practice and in farming before serving in the New Jersey Legislature, which he did from 1788 until 1789. He was then elected as a Senator from New Jersey to the United States Senate, serving from 1791 until his resignation in 1798. He remained active after the end of his Senate tenure, being commissioned to laying out the greatly expanding New York City north of what is now 14th Street, and serving as a commissioner to settle boundary disputes between the states of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He resided on the family estate called "Edgerston" on the banks of the Passaic River, where he died in 1846. The present day city of Rutherford, New Jersey lies on the land that was once "Edgerston".
