She was a sought after speaker where her unpretentious style and sense of humor graced many events. She worked tirelessly for the passage of the constitutional amendment for equal rights for women in North Carolina as well as ran for Commissioner of Labor in the mid 1970's. She was an ardent supporter of the American Cancer Society , including serving as chairman of the board and president of the N.C. Division of the American Cancer Society in 1982. She received the Society's Sword of Hope award in 1982 and was named an Honorary Life Member in 1995. She was a 1979 recipient of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Alumni Distinguished Service Award.
After many years of service to the state, Jessie Rae spent her remaining years on the family farm where she focused on her children, grandchildren, friends and community. She will be dearly missed.
A funeral service celebrating the life of Jessie Rae Scott will be held at Hawfields Presbyterian Church, 2115 S. 119, Mebane, at 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 29. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to one of the following: The Scott Family Collection at Alamance Community College, the Hawfields Presbyterian Church, the N.C. division of the American Cancer Society , or WEC International-USA.
