DeWitt was the son of Gov. Joseph Kent, Sr., Col. (1779-1837) and his first wife, Eleanor Lee Contee Wallace (1782-1826).

DeWitt married Juliana MacCubbin Sudler (ca. 1811-1875) on October 8, 1824 St. Peter's Protestant Episcopal Church, Baltimore, MD.

DeWitt and Julliana had the following children:
