Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as a Captain in the 12th New York Volunteer Infantry, then as Major of the 3rd New York Volunteer Cavalry, then as Colonel and commander of the 2nd United States Colored Cavalry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "meritorious services".
