Michigan Governor, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Bowdoin College Maine in 1827, studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Houlton, Maine, (1830-33). Moving to Monroe, Michigan, in 1833, he continued the practice of law and was a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives, (1835-37). He also was Michigan State bank commissioner, (1838-39), state auditor general in 1842 and an associate justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, (1842-45). In 1845, he was elected as a Democrat the 5th Governor of Michigan, serving until 1847. After leaving office, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving (1847-53). After leaving the Senate, he served as president of the commission (1853-56), to settle claims incurred during the Spanish- Mexican War. He then resumed his law career and served as the Tappan Professor of Law at the University of Michigan, (1879-83). He died in retirement at age 91.
