US Senator, North Carolina Governor. An 1806 graduate of Princeton University, he was admitted to the North Carolina bar in 1809. During the War of 1812 he commanded a company of volunteers and in 1815 he became a brigadier general in the North Carolina militia. In 1813 he was elected to the House of Commons in the North Carolina legislature, and was reelected several times. During five of these sessions, he served as either speaker or speaker pro tempore. On December 5, 1827, he was elected the state's 23rd Governor by his fellow legislators, but less than a year later he resigned to fill a US Senate seat (1828 to 1831). Following his service in the Senate he returned to his law practice in Raleigh. For a number of years he was the reporter of North Carolina Supreme Court cases.
