Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Utah Territorial Governor. At the start of the Civil War, he entered the Union Army as a volunteer at the age of 17. Mustered into the 3rd Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry, he served through Tennessee, Alabama and the Confederate campaign to capture Kentucky. In October, 1862, he was commissioned Colonel and commander of his regiment/ Later in the war he would command the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, Cavalry Corps, Army of the Cumberland and 3rd Division, Cavalry Corps, Military Department of Mississippi. For war services, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 25, 1865. After the war, he was United States Marshal for Kentucky, 1866 to 1876 and in 1880, President Rutherford B. Hayes appointed him Territorial Governor of Utah, serving until 1886.
