FAMILY NAME AND HERITAGE
Although he was born Robert McAdams, he changed his name to Adams as a young man. His McAdams ancestors were originally from Argylshire, Scotland and were forced to move to Londonderry, Ireland due to political upheavals, and then to Windham, NH about 1740 because of the famine.

Robert Adams was evidently the son of William McAdams although his birth records have not been located. He is mentioned as the son of William McAdams in the history of the town of Lyndenborough, NH.

Although the Scotch-Irish heritage had been forgotten four generations later, it was proudly claimed by three of Robert's grandchildren in their biographies: William ("History of Oakland County, Michigan, Vol. II, 1912"), and Sophronia/Oscar ("The Livonia Gazette," Friday, October 15, 1886).

According to the latter article, Robert's grandfather (McAdams) was killed by the Indians in the Revolutionary war. Prior to his death, the indians "commenced cutting his fingers and toes off at the first joints, and then took the second joints, and his sufferings must have been beyond description."

Robert Adams spent most of his adult life in Livonia, Livingston Co, NY. He also lived in Randolph & Tunbridge, VT. He married Anna SEVERENCE.

Robert's son, Alexander H. Adams was born 18 Mar 1787 in Orange County, VT. In 1817 he married Hannah Knowlton. He died in Jennings County, Indiana 3 Mar 1836.
