He died in a helicopter crash during combat operations in Zabul province, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. He was commissioned as a Naval intelligence officer. Two years later, he was assigned to an East Coast naval special warfare unit, starting the grueling SEAL training in Coronado in March 2007. Brendan's best friend and United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, roommate, 1stLt Travis Joseph Lemma Manion, was killed in 2007, and after Brendan's death, Travis was re-interred at Arlington National Cemetery where they both rest side by side.
