Civil War Union Brigadier General, Illinois Governor, US Senator. Born in Oldham County, Kentucky, he served as a 1st Lieutenant in the 4th Illinois Regiment during the Mexican War. In 1860, he was elected to the State Senate, but resigned to serve in the Civil War as Colonel of the 8th Illinois Volunteers. He commanded a brigade at the capture of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, and was promoted for gallantry Brigadier General in March 1862. Assigned command of the 16th Army Corps, he resigned in May 1864, when he was elected as a Republican the 14th Governor of Governor serving until 1869. In 1873, he was elected to the US Senate and served until 1879.
