Civil War Union Officer. Early into the Civil War, he enlisted as a Private in the 2nd US Artillery. Because it was suggesting he having attended a military school, he was promoted a 2nd Lieutenant in command of Battery F, 4th US Artillery Brigade, XII Corps. He was most noted for his gallant service at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, when he participated in a bombardment of the Confederates which resulted in driving them from advanced Union positions at Culp's Hill, Baltimore Pike and Cemetery Ridge. He continued to serve in the Union Army through the campaigns in Tennessee, until he was honorably discharged on July 22, 1864. He died of Bright's disease on May 4, 1881, at Cottage Hospital, Minnesota.
