Maufacturer of waterproof imitation beaver hats, New York State treasurer, commissioner of the Albany Basin, father-in-law of New York Governor William Marcy, owner of much of the land now occupied by the Albany Rural Cemetery. The village of Altamont, N.Y. was once named Knowersville in his honor.
