He was the father of a 5 year old son. He resided in Olympia, Washington.
In 2002, he was taken hostage by armed guerillas when backpacking in Colombia. Born in Colombia, he had hoped to get in touch with his roots. After being held for days, he was taken to a graveyard at the edge of a village where he believed he was going to be executed. Instead, he was questioned and freed. On June 5, Mark Wedeven, disappeared after he was hit by an avalanche while climbing Mount Rainier. Wedeven was at 12,000 feet when he was swept away. His body has not been recovered. The slide hit 10 other climbers and three had to be dug out of the snow. According to Mark's dad, Mark had summited Mount Rainier at least three times.
Mark had not registered for the climb according to other climbers and was not aware of warnings being given about bad weather.
Mark Wedeven is remembered by family and friends as an avid outdoors-man and social activist. He was devoted in helping people. He helped newly arrived immigrants learn English. He was very aware of what he deemed injustice and was not afraid to stand up to it, always in a peaceful way. Mark was a gentle soul, he was spiritual and lived life to the fullest according to all who knew him. With Mark you never knew what to expect, life was an adventure.
