John Fraser Dewar was born in London, Ontario. He joined the RCAF on May 25, 1942 and was awarded his flying badge at No. 2 Service Flying Training School Uplands, Ontario on July 9, 1943. Pilot Officer J. F Dewar was first posted to No. 111 Squadron on October 15, 1943 before being transferred to Britain on January 9, 1944 where he was eventually posted to No. 440 Squadron.
On August 12, 1944 his aircraft, Typhoon Ib serial MP122 coded 'I8-P', was hit by antiaircraft fire while bombing a bridge near Saint-Philbert-sur-Orne, Normandy, France. The aircraft burst into flames and crashed and F/O J. F. Dewar was not seen to bale out.
