Daughter of Finly H. and M. Alice Gray. Finly was elected to represent Indiana's 6th and 10th Districts in the United States House of Representatives. He served from 1911 to 1917 and 1933 to 1939. Finly was also Mayor of Connersville, Indiana, from 1904 to 1910.

Gray willed additional property to the society in 1947, bringing the total to more than 600 acres. Gifts from members have allowed the acquisition of more property so that the Sanctuary now occupies more than 700 acres.
