South Carolina Governor, US Congressman, US Senator. He was elected as a Democrat to represent first South Carolina's 6th, then 5th Congressional Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1821 until he resigned in 1834 to assume the office of Governor. He served as Governor of South Carolina from 1834 until 1836. In 1842 he was elected as a Democratic Senator from South Carolina to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the esignation of Senator William C. Preston, and served in that office from 1842 until he resigned in 1846.
