Studied medicine with Dr Hitchcock and moved to Topsham, Maine in 1804, before settling in Bath in 1805. He was devoted to his profession, and in some of its branches became highly distinguished. He received the honorary degree of MD at Dartmouth College in 1822, and was in practice 48 yrs. He was a scientific and successful practitioner, a consistent and devoted friend, and an honest and upright man.
