Returned to Boston in 1854 as the Secretary & Executive Manager of the new Board of Trade, which superseded the disbanded Boston Chamber of Commerce.
Elected as President, Boston Inland Mutual Ins. Co, in 1858. This was a Boston based company that insured against delays in the transport of goods by land or sea. It was disbanded in 1861 after the start of the Civil War.
In 1864, returned to Europe and lived in Paris for the remainder of his life. He was on a visit to the U.S. to complete the family tomb and inter Arthur there. He was visiting Saratoga Springs when he died.
Tomb construction began in 1874 and was finished by Frances. It is made of Nova Scotia stone and measures 20 ft sq by 30 ft high. It originally had stained glass windows and tile floors; the bronze doors cost $2700.00; the total cost was $25,500.00. The lettering on the tablets was done in gold leaf.
