Sarah was the eldest of the six children born to George and Susan (Haight) Galloway. She had four sisters and one brother, Elizabeth, who married Edwin Winans , Stephen, Julia, Mary and Rosamund. She was the only one of the children born in New York before the family moved to Hamburg, Livingston County, Michigan.

In 1858 Sarah married Milton W Reynolds, son of Alexander and Rebecca Reynolds. The moved to Nebraska for a short period of time, eventually living in Kansas for a number of years, where their two daughters, Edwina and Susan were born. In 1889 the family moved to Indian Territory, Edmond, later Oklahoma, where Milton died in 1890. Sarah took her daughters back to Hamburg, where she had lived for the first 24 years of her life. She died there in 1899 from heart failure.
