Civil War Union Army Brigadier General. He began the Civil War as Colonel of the 29th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and in the Battles of Shiloh, Corinth and Murfreesboro, where he was wounded commanding a brigade. He was wounded again at the Battle of Liberty Gap (June 27, 1863), and was incapacitated until 1864 when he commanded a division at the Battle of Nashville. He was promoted to Brigadier General, and was brevetted Major General. He served as a US Senator from California from 1881 to 1886. Originally interred in Laurel Hill Cemetery, San Francisco, he was reinterred in Arlington in 1913, when Laurel Hill ceased to exist.
