Minnesota Governor. Educated at the University of Minnesota and at Northwest Law College, he earned a law degree in 1915. He was in a private legal practice, plus served as the special assistant to the Hennepin County attorney in 1919 and served as the Hennepin County Attorney, (1920-30). In1931, he was elected the 22nd Governor of Minnesota and died in office of cancer at age 44. A popular Minnesota Governor, during his tenure he put forth funding which was secured for the improvement of unemployment benefits, as well as for new construction of highways. Also, regulations were imposed on the sale of securities; and state charitable and prison institutions were expanded.
