Governor of Ohio, U.S. Congressman, Attorney, Civil War Veteran. Born near Owensville in Clermont County, Ohio, he served for the Union Army during the Civil War before becoming a politician and the eventual Governor of Ohio. At 16, he was a Private with the 153rd Ohio National Guard Infantry and later graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1869. Pattison then studied law under Alfred Yaple and was admitted to the bar in Ohio in 1872. He practiced as an attorney in Cincinnati, Ohio until he was elected to the Ohio State House of Representatives in 1873. After one term, he returned to his legal profession and became the Attorney for the Cincinnati Committee of Safety from 1874 to 1876. In 1881, he became an insurance executive as vice-president of the Union Central Life Insurance Company. Pattison was appointed by the Ohio Legislature in 1890 to fill a vacant seat in the Ohio Senate and became president of Union Central in 1891. Elected as a Democrat to represent Ohio's 11th District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1891 to 1893. Unsuccessful for reelection in 1892, he resumed his legal practice until he was elected as Ohio's 43rd Governor in 1906. He took office as a strong supporter of prohibition, but was unable to accomplish his gubernatorial goals due to his deteriorating health. Pattison died in office at his residence in Milford, Ohio six months later when he was 59 years old. He had lived at the Promont House in Milford, a Victorian Italianate mansion, from 1879 until his death. The home has been restored to how it was in the 1880's and is open to the public as a museum.
