Adolph Altermatt was born and reared in the Leavenworth area. He married Maria Schwandt of Nicollet. In 1892 Mr. Altermatt established the A & B Bargain Store in Springfield. Later this became the Altermatt Mercantile Company, Springfield's leading department store. Adolph and Marie had eight children: Erwin who managed the store at one time; Elva (Mrs Richard Schmidt) formerly a Sanborn school teacher, now residing in Eden Valley, Florence (Mrs. Herman Schwandt) formerly a teacher in Ortonville, now decased; Archie who married Lorraine Schmid, a manager of the department store and later worked for Monarch Life Insurance, now deceased; Marie who taught for 40 years and passed away in Florida; Mldred a U of M Grad, and Dietician resided in Robbinsdale and Gretchen last known to live in Oregon.
