Andrew Syme Sr. was born 1841 in Petersburg, Petersburg County, VA one of 8 known surviving children (3 boys/5 girls) born to wealthy newspaper editor John W. Syme and his wife, Mary C. Madden.

He was the paternal grandson of the Rev. Andrew Syme (1755-1845) of Scotland who was Rector of Blandford Church, and subsequently St. Paul's Church in Petersburg, Virginia for over 40 years and married Jean Matherson Cameron, daughter of Rev. John Cameron, DD, sister of Judge Duncan Cameron of Hillsboro, Orange Co, NC. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson of Michael Cowan Madden & Elizabeth Bland Batte of Prince George Co, VA.

Andrew's father was a graduate of William and Mary's college at Williamsburg, VA and studied law with his kinsman, Judge Frederick Nash, at Hillsboro,NC. On being admitted to the bar, he returned to Virginia and began the practice of his profession in Petersburg. In a few years he gave up the law and purchased the Petersburg Intelligencer, the leading organ of the Whig party in southern Virginia, which under his able management became the most valuable exponent of the Whig party in the state. He represented his city in the state legislature for several years, and was an influential member of that body. In 1856 he purchased the Raleigh Register from Seaton Gale, the official Whig organ of that state and removed to Raleigh where he continued to reside until 1864. He labored for the triumph of Whig principles. He opposed secession until it became an established fact, and then unhesitatingly gave his allegiance to the South, becoming an active Supporter of the cause. In 1861, he returned to Petersburg, VA with a view of reestablishing himself in journalism, and began the publication of the Register, but only for a short time, as the city became the center of military operations, and was cut off from the outside world. He did not long survive the results of the war, and died suddenly, November 26,1865.

Andrew Syme returned to Raleigh after the war and began working as the Clerk to NC Secretary of State. On April 28, 1869, the 27 year old married 25 year old Blanche Bragg, daughter of former NC Governor and US Senator, Thomas Bragg & Isabella M. Cuthbert. The couple would have one child, Blanche Bragg Syme (c. 1870) and Blanch died either in childbirth or soon after. Andrew's widowed mother and 18-year old brother, Duncan, soon joined his household to help care for the infant.

On January 30, 1873, the 31-year old widower married 27-year old Annie Shepard Bryan, youngest daughter of the Hon. John Heritage Bryan & Mary William Sheperd. Andew and Annie would become parents to 4 sons: Andrew Syme Jr. (1874-1954), George Frederick Syme (1878-1933), William E. Anderson Syme (1878-1909) and John Bryan Syme (1881-1881).

Andrew Syme died July 5, 1894 at age 53. His wife of 21 years survived him another 32 years, passing in 1926 at age 81.
