SHELBY If there is a kind, gracious, and loving woman in heaven, then she now has a true friend and companion. Elsie Belle Gidney Eskridge, beloved mother and friend to many here on earth, died Wednesday, June 29, 2005, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born Feb. 16, 1913, the daughter of the late Dr. Robert Many Gidney and Hattie Surratt Gidney.

Elsie, known as Mama E. to her family, resided in the wonderful southern town of Shelby most of her life. She graduated from Shelby public schools and Appalachian State University. Among her hobbies and volunteer services were the Junior Charity League, the Reviewers Book Club, the Dutch Club, the Round Dozen Bridge Club, the Triple Deck, North Lake Country Club and Cleveland County Country Club. But, foremost she was a proud member of Central United Methodist Church beside the old historic town square in the center of Shelby. At church she was a member of the Horace Grigg Sunday School Class and the Official Board of the church.

Preceding Elsie in death and awaiting her joyous arrival are her dearly loved husband, Alfred Greene Hoot Eskridge; her sisters, Mary Gidney Hoey and Harriet Gidney Parris; and brother, Robert S. Gidney.

She is survived by her twin sister, Lib Gidney Webb of Shelby; and her three children, her first son, Alfred Greene Eskridge Jr., and wife, Suzanne, of Salem, her daughter, Anne Eskridge Barnes, and husband, Norris, of Winston-Salem, and her second son, Robert Porter Bob Eskridge, whose generous and faithful caregiving at home for many years when Elsies health was failing will never be forgotten.

Her grandchildren are seven in number, Alfred Greene Tripp Eskridge and wife, Julie, of Atlanta, Ga.; Allison Eskridge White of Greenville, S.C.; Catherine Eskridge Poe and husband, Mitchell, of Greenville; John Eskridge of Nashville, Tenn.; Spencer Barnes Moore and husband, Rhys, of Ridgefield, Conn.; John Norris Barnes and wife, Sandra, of Bozeman, Mont.; and step-granddaughter, Allyson Church Bergin, and husband, Tom, of Greenville. And these grandchildren produced for Elsie 10 great-grandchildren.

Elsie always put family first. Her memory of us has faded, but our memories of her will not. She resides with us in our hearts as an example of gentle strength and faithful love. We will draw on that for all the days of our lives.

The funeral will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, with Dr. Joe Reeves officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home from 1 to 2 p.m.
