Daughter of Ohio native Dr. James Harvey Buell and his wife, Nancy Mitchell, Nancy Ruth was residing at her family home in Williamsport, Indiana at the time of her marriage there to Joseph Ewing McDonald on 25 Nov 1844.

The first wife the three wives of Joseph Ewing McDonald, Nancy was the mother of all his children: Ezekiel Morgan, Malcomb Andrew, Frank Buell, and Anna M. McDonald.

Her husband, the son of John and Eleanor (Piatt) McDonald, was raised by his stepfather, John Kerr, who moved Joseph’s family from Ohio to Indiana in 1826. Her husband was twice elected Indiana State Attorney General, and twice elected to Congress.

She and her husband were residing at Indianapolis at the time of her death.
