Judge of the Superior Court of the Cherokee District, 1858-61. Also served in the Georgia General Assembly representing Chattooga County. Served as Captain of Company A ("Cohutta Rangers") [Murray County, GA men], 39th Regiment, Georgia (Volunteer) Infantry, Army of Tennessee, Confederate States Army; entering Civil War service on 25 Feb 1862. The 39th Infantry Regiment, organized at Dalton, Georgia, in April, 1862, recruited its members in the counties of Butts, Whitfield, Bartow, Dade, Fayette, Clayton, and Chattahoochee. Died of disease at home, in Whitfield County, Ga., 27 Nov 1862.

As a lawyer and confederate soldier, Captain Crook was the prosecutor in the Andrews' raiders court martial in April-May 1862 in Chattanooga. He gained a conviction, and James Andrews was sentenced to death and hanged a few weeks later.
